The exterior of the 2021 Kia Sedona in Boardman is perhaps where the redesign will be most readily obvious. Kia has been knocking it out of the park lately in terms of making each nameplate distinct while also incorporating familiar Kia elements, such as the tiger-nose grille. Kia also made some changes for the 2020 exterior that hint at what its plans are. These features include a Smart Power Liftgate that opens when it senses your smart key rather than you having to use your foot or whatever.

Kia could set the 2021 Kia Sedona apart by offering this option, and if the Pacifica gets an AWD option—which has been hinted at—it may be necessary in order to avoid looking like the nameplate that fell behind the curve. Another point to consider is towing capacity. The Sedona has been a capable hauler with a maximum of about 3,500 pounds, and we would expect Kia to at least mirror those capabilities if not improve on them.

For the Sedona, Kia has offered the same engine for a while now. It is an excellent engine that delivers both in terms of performance and fuel economy, so it is unclear whether Kia will go with a new engine. The greater likelihood is that we get further refinement of the current 3.3-liter V6 GDI Lambda engine. It is worth noting that the Sedona got a completely new transmission for the 2019 model year: an eight-speed automatic. This delivered smoother shifting and even better fuel performance. The naturally aspirated engine is currently rated for 276 hp at 6,000 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,200 rpm.

As with most of its vehicles, Kia offers its Drive Wise, which is a suite of driver assistance technologies, many of which complement and enhance each other. Although not yet confirmed, it is expected that Kia will expand both the standard and available driver assistance equipment. It currently offers Uvo3 communications, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and collision avoidance.
